Sonic Mines are weapons used by the Terra Nova colonists for defense against threats. When the Tenth Pilgrimage arrives in Terra Nova, in the distance, a sonic mine was heard, as it was tripped by an Allosaur.

In the episode "Nightfall", Commander Nathaniel Taylor mentions that the power outage also turns off the Sonic Mines.
